The Sea, the Realm of Freedom

The Sea,

The last realm of Liberty and Normality.

My older friends already know that the Sea is my great and unsecret love. A love that has already become passion in these days when only at sea are you still free — a freedom impossible to put into words. Only at sea, far out, are you still sheltered from the spirit of negation of the “New Normality”, from the stupidity and cowardice of those who populate the “Brave New World” that has spread like a plague over all the dry land.

I shall not gloss any further on these themes, so well known to you, my friends.

I shall tell you only, point by point, the “breaking news” of my latest voyage.

First of all, on 12 July, on the very day Macron announced compulsory vaccination for certain professional categories in France, in a small bay off an uninhabited island, from the vessel worth at least 60 million euros which, obviously, entirely by accident lay next to our little boat, in the evening, from the terrace on the third “floor” of our neighbours, I could hear clearly and beyond doubt the royal anthem of France, followed by applause and a few resolute chants: “FREXIT! FREXIT!…”

I do not know in what key this information must be read; I shall reflect on it. But until then I thought it important that you should have the information “bare”.

What is certain, though, is that three or four days later the “ordinary” French too took to the street. I think the first sign we ought to sense is that the whole of society, from the bottom to the top, has reached the limit of its patience.

Secondly, I cannot help telling you of the astonishment I felt when I saw over 200 very young people, come from all over the world for the Yacht Week, who nevertheless conformed blindly to the order not to dance. For yes, the Greek government, in its wisdom, has forbidden every form of dancing in Greece, dancing favouring CoVid… as everyone knows!

I repeat: 200 young people spent a week — a stay for which they paid at least €2,000 a head — without dancing in any public place. And when I speak of dance I am not talking about some waltz or tango. No, I am talking about this contemporary dancing, this “minimalist” dancing, this strictly individual dancing in which you stand in your corner with a glass in one hand and wave the other hand and one foot as if you had suddenly been struck by a fit of Parkinson’s. Yes, this “dance” too is strictly forbidden, it is CoVid-friendly and utterly politically incorrect. Which is why the young people, all 200-odd of them, stood like blocks of stone and consumed alcohol, a great deal of alcohol.

That is a sign that the virosis of fear has hit the young hardest… the world of tomorrow. Which means that these people are on the point of winning the match.

Not least, I must confess to you another first: on returning to Athens we tried to enter a restaurant. A somewhat smarter one, as befits a farewell dinner.

We could not.

The reason: there were no places on the terrace and inside… I was not vaccinated, I had no covidian pass of free passage.

We left. Without discussion.

And I do not regret leaving.

My only regret is that I left the sea. The last realm of

Liberty and normality.

The Sea.
