The Lesson of the Turkish Election
The last democracy of Europe has decided: “No one will limit the rights of the Turkish people, no one will stop us!”
That will remain memorable in the speech of the winner, Erdoğan.
These words will mark Turkey’s policy in the coming years:
Turkey remains sovereigntist, independent, and asserts its role as a great local power.
More: Turkey, a member of NATO and of BRICS at the same time, will distance itself from the USA and also from “modernism”: “BYE, BYE MR KEMAL!”, from Erdoğan’s own mouth, certifies this. The fact that he said it in English is a direct message to the USA; but when he referred to KEMAL… he certainly was not referring ONLY to the already anonymous Mr Kılıçdaroğlu, the “sultan’s” rival, a great supporter of the Western “values” represented by LGBTQWERTY and by *Slava*.
The message had as its historical addressee Mr Mustafa Kemal Atatürk! The fact is confirmed by the sentence at the beginning of Erdoğan’s speech: “I began this journey in Istanbul, today I end it in Istanbul! Thank you, Istanbul!” — and the fact that the “sultan” preferred Istanbul to Ankara as the starting and finishing point of his electoral campaign is not accidental, just as it is not accidental that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu chose Ankara. Istanbul was the Ottoman capital; Ankara is the capital of the “modern” state built by Atatürk. The message is simple: Kemal has become history. Kemal Atatürk.
That is why I risk one more “prophecy”: during Erdoğan’s term Istanbul will become the capital of Turkey once more. I am convinced of it. It remains to be seen whether the future will prove me right, but the regained status of great regional power and the return towards traditional values will call for a clear demarcation in time and in space, and the change of Turkey’s capital will be that moment and that place.
And something else will remain after today, something apparently paradoxical:
Turkey is the last democracy of Europe!
There were candidates with diametrically opposed views, freely expressed, submitted to a free ballot in which the people decided clearly, though narrowly, Erdoğan’s victory being confirmed by his rival, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Where else does that happen in the “civilised and democratic world”? Where?
Where else does the people decide against the global trend? Where?
Certainly not in Europe or in the Western “democratic world”.
And here is the paradox: democracy, born and theorised in the West, is still practised only at the gates of the Orient…
A conclusion? The Turkish people has decided democratically to turn a page of history for good: unipolarism has set; today Pax Americana has died.
Multipolarism was delivered in Istanbul.
