Today I Shall Name Names
Although I do not shrink from writing about baseness and human squalor, I rarely do so by giving names. Today I shall do it.
Why? Because the protagonist of today’s post belongs to that category of persons who exude arrogance and who, despite the elegance ostentatiously displayed, seek to dominate you by their social position, by the money they wish to give the impression they possess… and above all by the fact that they are a “foreign investor”, that new species of conquering settlers before whom we can have only gratitude… and a bowed head.
Well, it is not quite so… and I have the courage, and consider it necessary, to perform an act of public moral hygiene and to write about a swindler.
The swindler of whom I speak is French. His name is Jean-Claude Moscovici.
I know, the name seems familiar. It only seems so. In fact, until now only his cousin was known: Pierre Moscovici — former Socialist member of the European Parliament, former minister of European Affairs and former minister of the Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade in two French governments, former European Commissioner for economic and financial affairs, at present appointed since 2020 by Macron as President of the Court of Audit of France. That is the better-known cousin and, I hope, the less swindling one.
Jean-Claude Moscovici, the cousin of the French politician, much less known, is nevertheless a businessman whose name has been mentioned in the Romanian press in connection with certain scandals involving his firm ProMobDecor SRL and its employees. By way of example only, MSNEWS.RO tells us that “The former administrator of the Mureș furniture manufacturer ProMobDecor in the village of Nazna (commune of Sâncraiu de Mureș), the Frenchman Alain Vigneau, is being tried for embezzlement in continuing form.” Well, that does not surprise us… it seems to be a tradition.
From the local press we also learn that “The Frenchman Jean Claude Marian Moscovici came to the attention of the Mureș public in 2005, when he bought, for 25,000 euros, the so-called Toldalagi Castle of Corunca, or more precisely the ruins of the early nineteenth-century manor house built by Toldalagi Ferenc (the fourth Count Toldalagi) on the site of a seventeenth-century castle. Although he ought to have restored/rehabilitated it, Moscovici did almost nothing, the building being to this day in a wholly compromised state, on which account he entered into a dispute with the public administration of Corunca. In 2019 he offered the ruins of the castle for sale to the local administration for the sum of 180,000 euros.”
In short, I believe in the presumption of innocence, for which reason I shall say nothing about those files. Nor shall I say anything about my client’s case, in which he must recover from Moscovici Jean Claude some 60,000 euros over some two years. On that I shall let justice say what it must say.
I tell you only that cousin Jean Claude Moscovici is a SWINDLER, and I can state this without doubt as the result of a direct and personal experience with the “French investor”. And I have the right to do so, this being a purely personal appreciation of a moral order, therefore not interfering with the court files.
In brief: after I had lodged an application for the insolvency of the company mentioned above, Jean Claude Moscovici rang me and, after a series of compliments but also of sharper retorts, and of course after having tried to “corrupt” me as well by proposing a direct business deal between himself and me, insisted that we proceed to negotiations by which the dispute might immediately be settled. It seemed to me legitimate and indeed normal, for which reason I accepted.
And we agreed together that the negotiations should take place on “neutral ground”, in Paris, on 16 and 17 February. I bought air tickets, cancelled other business… and since Wednesday evening I have been in Paris.
You have probably already guessed the outcome: not only did Jean Claude Moscovici fail to appear, but he answered neither telephone calls nor messages. Nothing. Total silence… A SWINDLE!
Very well, Paris is wonderful even in February, I took the pulse of the citizens at the protests against the raising of the pension age, I had some discussions with persons absolutely relevant to our “work”… so the time was not entirely wasted.
But a swindle remains a swindle. And it is a humiliation I have not experienced until this age. It is a good lesson, which I could nevertheless have done without.
But beyond the legitimate anger that drives me to write these lines, it must be emphasised that this only apparently “minor” swindle reveals a profound contempt which the “investor” holds and displays shamelessly towards those among whom he lives, towards those off whom he makes his money. A swindle that demonstrates that Jean Claude Moscovici feeds his arrogance on his belonging to the “caste” of foreign investors, an arrogance which probably serves to soothe his suffering at not being as famous as his cousin, the great French politician.
Never mind, I shall help him free of charge and of my own accord to become known:
JEAN CLAUDE MOSCOVICI IS A SWINDLER!
Postscript: not fifteen minutes after this post, Mr Moscovici telephoned me to apologise for this terrible *malentendu* (misunderstanding), telling me that he had not understood that I had confirmed the meeting… and that he had therefore not come to Paris. But that he is ready to pay the travel fees and to conclude an agreement through the lawyers he has in the country.
Wishing to believe in his good faith, I shall accept his apologies. And the compensation, of course.
Besides, the publicity is *pro bono*.
