“I, the Judge, Rise and Plead for Every Man’s Right to Speak Freely”

Ironically or not, today, when the representative of “the mother of democracy” came “to visit her own”, the “representatives of the Romanian state” decided that the moment had come for the right to free expression to be suppressed.

No, do not think of fake news, established by a set of ignoramuses: what is at stake is no longer being allowed to criticise the “representatives of the Romanian state”.

That is, we shall no longer have the right to tell those we ourselves elected that they are sold to others, that they promote to office their relatives, their protégés, their mistresses and their lovers, that they are incompetent — because, is it not so, “it is disturbing, my dear! Disturbing!” — and to be labelled pro-Russian for saying it.

In ’89 men died for the right of every man to disagree with me; but it seems they died in vain.

Perhaps some do not wish to understand, but my Romania — and the Romania of all of us who do not count — is not a military unit where an order is carried out, not debated.

In my Romania, I too, the judge, rise and defend this right, at any risk. Because I swore to defend the fundamental rights and liberties of citizens. Upon the Bible. That is, I made a covenant before God.

Yes, dictatorship is in power.

Yes, we surrender our rights with such ease that sometimes we may even deserve what happens to us.

Yes, we have grown so hardened these last two years that nothing interests us but our own bubble.

Those who died in ’89 left us the right to say what we think, the right to dream of a Romania that counts, the right to fight to the last drop of blood for every man’s right to disagree with us.

And we? What do we leave our children?

Hatred, selfishness, rights limited or suppressed… that is, a Romania subordinated, impoverished, dulled into idiocy. In other words: nothing.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

The road to their dictatorship is paved with unconstitutional enactments.

Stop. You cannot put your fist in all our mouths.

We have died for freedom. We can do it again.

Down with censorship.
