On Two Departed Heroes

I have come back.

I do not know for how long, but it will be long enough to do what must be done.

And today I must speak to you about heroes.

For this week we lost two men whom for years I have held to be heroes: Dragoș Dumitriu and Mihai Făgădaru.

Two wonderful men, so special and at the same time so unlike one another that only the exceptional times in which we live could have set them side by side in the trenches from which the Truth is defended. Two men who deliberately put on the shirt of death and threw themselves wholly into the war against lying and subversion, wielding masterfully — but in ways, places and styles so different — the sword of the word beneath the helmet of salvation.

No, I did not know them in “real life”, in that life where we all have our falls and weaknesses, our fears and pettinesses, our sins, more or fewer. I knew them only from the “field of battle”, from the altar upon which, with absolute disinterest, they chose to sacrifice themselves.

Their acts of heroism were beyond counting… of late they had almost passed into ordinariness, being performed with the naturalness of an everyday gesture, so that they seemed almost commonplace: Dragoș had again written an article dissecting the lie of progressive propaganda; Mihai had again gone out into the street and given a speech that brought God into the hearts of those fighting for freedom… Yes, both of them had made of heroism a “commonplace”! A “commonplace” we shall miss enormously, which leaves us poorer and more defenceless before the powers of derangement and subversion.

Their courage and their devotion were surpassed only by their generosity and their love for this people. And I exaggerate in nothing — please believe me.

And, by an irony of fate, both ended their days in hospital, in those hospitals bereft of medicines, those hospitals which have now become antechambers of death.

And as though that were not enough, Mihai’s memory has been martyred in every conceivable way these past days by the abject packs of carrion-eaters in the press of the propaganda of the abomination of desolation. Human squalor has sunk so low that the press even published the audio recording Mihai made of his last thoughts and wishes a few hours before he passed to the Lord.

These men were marginalised, anathematised, mocked in every way during their lives by the anti-national Propaganda. They accepted that. As they accepted the risk that even after death they would be sneered at or demonised. They knew it, and they agreed to fight to the end, in a fight in which they knew there would be neither laurel crowns nor public gratitude. They fought to the end. They fought only for the country and for God. Like Heroes.

And that is precisely why I am torn with grief… Certainly, they will remain alive in our memory and in our prayers. Then, when we too are gone, they will remain in the litanies for heroes, remembered and forever blessed alongside those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, those persecuted for righteousness’ sake, and the peacemakers.

May the Lord give us too the strength and the courage to follow the example and the path that Dragoș and Mihai followed.
