“How So, Counsel?”

A liberal asked me in a television studio: “How is it, sir, that you — a lawyer, a liberal profession — do not support liberal measures, right-wing policies?”

I answered him drily: “No, if they are anti-national!”

What I saw today from Cîțu, the minister of smoke and screens and of Finance, strengthens my conviction that the measures foreseen by the liberals are in the first place anti-national and only afterwards of an evidently Neo-liberal nature.

In the first place, all the measures of “liberalisation” — if by that are understood loans from international financial institutions, the elimination of minimal taxation of corporations by repealing Emergency Ordinance 114/2018, the reduction of consumption in favour of “public investment” — will throw Romania into a new and real economic crisis, disastrous for the country and for its citizens, but extremely profitable for banks, for great capital and for corporations.

I shall not enter now into a theoretical analysis. But into an applied one, from the perspective of my personal but legitimate interests. Sincere as you know me to be, I admit it: the measures announced by Iohannis’s (Neo)liberals will affect me directly: I have lived all my life by work in the private sector, making small investments and defending the interests of the ordinary citizen and of small (at most medium) traders.

Now they, the citizens and the small investors, will be the first affected by the “reduction of consumption” for the profit of the “great investments” from which only the banks and the great international corporations will benefit… corporations which will know how to “come out at a loss” and/or to externalise the profit.

If that is what it means to be “liberal”, then I, a simple citizen who does not feed off the state as a tick and who does not work with corporations and multinationals but only with other simple citizens like myself… despite my liberal profession, I CANNOT BE A “LIBERAL” AND I CANNOT SUPPORT “RIGHT-WING POLICIES”!
