“We Want Hospitals, Not Stadiums! Schools, Not Stadiums! Motorways, Not Stadiums!”
When are we to shout these? Or is that not allowed?”
Postscript: someone was telling me that stadiums are better than a cathedral which will cost a billion euros… I told him that, first of all, the cathedral will not cost a billion.
Then, the costs are borne by the Church as well, not only out of the public purse. Whereas out of local and/or central budgets dozens of football stadiums worth tens or hundreds of millions of euros have been built… and this, by the way, at a time when we no longer have football, nor footballers, nor teams that actually play football.
Not least: within fifty years at most, the stadiums built today with so very much public money will have become decrepit, obsolete… they will have to be pulled down to make room for more modern ones, “brought up to date” for the times that are to come.
All that while, the Cathedral will still stand as something present… even five hundred years from now. And if there are no longer any believers — I hope that time never comes, but even without Orthodox faithful, the cathedral will remain present at least as an architectural and cultural “relic”: as a monument to the days when, in the territory called Romania, there still lived a population that still believed in something… in something other than the absolute power of money and the “miracle” of goods with a shelf life of two years at most.
