Football is not only about technique and physical strength.

Football, like any sport, is above all about a state of mind, about strength of mind and of character.

And in the case of national teams it is also about pride and identity. A pride that comes in part from the political factor; an identity shaped in part by cultural identity.

That is why Romania has no football.

And that is why Hungary has.

Bravo, Hungary!

Postscript: “meanwhile”, Romania 0 – Montenegro 3. The Romanian public looks on, stunned, sunflower seeds cracking in the corner of its mouth, waiting for the Americans to save it, while lying awake at night over the bills issued by foreign corporations for the resources extracted from beneath our own feet.

Never mind. Let us turn the manele up louder while we watch politically correct news on the screens.

Come, let there be merriment.
