The Invisible People

This post is about invisible people. And about nobody.

Yes, there are invisible people. I have known invisible people.

For example Iulica. A woman of about 55, who lives a few dozen metres from my house.

She is that kind of woman whom the community considers mad, abnormal… precisely it, the community, which is so un-good, so ab-normal; they judged and labelled this woman as mad — she who was always good to those around her.

She always came to offer to help, to do anything… and never asked for money! And if you offered her a few lei and she thought it too much for what she had done, she gave back the “undue” part of the money, and there was no gainsaying her.

Nobody knocked at her door. She came when she needed something, asking for a few slices of bread… or a piece of meat from the grill… or a beer!

Well, I have not seen Iulica for a few days. Neither I nor the other people she used to call upon.

Perhaps because in fact I never saw her. She was the invisible woman.

I was convinced she had gone to work a few days somewhere else.

I was not mistaken!

She has gone. Probably to gather the leaves in the garden of paradise, or to help Him who needs no help, as she did with us here. She has gone for good!

But her body is still in the house next to mine. There, where it has lain for who knows how many days…

Nobody went to knock at her door. And today, when I realised that I had not seen the woman I had never seen, I tried to appeal to the neighbours to call the Police, being in a hurry, as usual, to leave for nothing towards nothing.

Nobody in the “community” would! They all said “…I don’t want anything to do with the Police! Do you know what it’s like to go and make a statement?”

Nobody, with 2 exceptions, came out — not even when, at my call, firemen came, and ambulances, and policemen, and dog-catchers — for there is as yet no Police for animals.

Nobody.

A multitude of nobody!

A community of nobody living next to the invisible woman.

And then I remembered:

“And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried.”

Today Iulica is in Abraham’s bosom!

And we wait to be buried.

God forgive her!

And forgive us too!

I hope He can!
